Let’s face it, an hotel room directory isn’t normally a thing of beauty. It might be lots of other things – practical, functional, accessible and so on – but aesthetics don’t normally come into it. Well, at Lumi, we wanted to do things a little differently. We wanted to have a directory that would not only fit seamlessly into our rooms but that would also reflect our localist approach to design. And while it had to look great from the get-go – of course! – it also had to have the potential to age with grace (like a fine wine or a great pair of jeans).
Fortunately we were introduced to the talented Cláudio Silva. Cláudio is the founder and master craftsman of a local company called Project 226 which specialises in producing – entirely by hand – beautiful limited edition leather accessories.
We asked him to come up with some ideas for the Lumi room directory and he did us proud. His final design is a refined and minimalist leather wallet, with a simple fastener that nods to the brass elements that feature throughout the hotel, and a discreet logo pressed into the cover. The leather used is unmistakably high quality – the sort that is soft as butter and that will age beautifully.
Each directory takes at least five hours to make. They are painstakingly hand cut, hand stitched and individually stamped with The Lumiares logo.
It’s well worth taking a look at the Project 226 website which showcases the rest of Claudio’s work (link at the end). Here you can find his collection of limited edition backpacks and tote bags as well as other leather accessories – check it out every month or so as new items are added all the time (including some gorgeous leather sandals which are already in production).
Or, when you’re in town and staying at Lumi, you can take a look at the collection in person. The nearest shop stocking Project 226 is just down the hill in Chiado; look for Fabrica Features, a curated gallery shop of European makers that is located on the top floor of the Benetton building.
